These are classic formulas, so treat this as a target zone, not a rule. Body composition matters more than the exact number on the scale.

Ideal body weight is a reference figure that estimates a reasonable weight for someone of your height and sex. The formulas behind it were originally created to help with medical drug dosing, and they remain a handy target to aim toward, as long as you understand what they can and cannot tell you.

Where these formulas come from

The best-known equations, Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi, were developed decades ago and share the same idea: a base weight at five feet of height, plus a set amount for each inch above that. They differ slightly in their numbers, which is why we show all four plus an average.

How to use your result

Treat the output as the center of a sensible range, not an exact goal. Because these formulas use only height and sex, they cannot account for how much muscle you carry or the size of your frame. A muscular, lean person may sit above their calculated ideal weight and be perfectly healthy.

What matters more than the number

How much muscle versus fat you carry shapes how you look, move, and feel far more than a single weight target. Two people at the same weight can look entirely different. That is why body composition, not just the scale, is the better thing to chase.

Reaching a weight you can keep

The best target is one you can maintain without misery. SmaartCoach builds the meals and workouts to move you toward a healthy weight and, just as important, keep you there for good.

Frequently asked questions

How is ideal weight calculated?

Classic formulas like Devine and Robinson estimate a target weight from your height and sex. They give a reference point, not a strict rule, since they ignore muscle and frame size.

Which ideal weight formula is best?

No single formula is perfect. We show several and an average so you can see a sensible range rather than one number.

Should I aim for my ideal weight?

Use it as a rough target. Body composition matters more than the exact figure, so someone muscular may sit above it and still be lean and healthy.

Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?

They overlap but differ. Healthy weight is a range based on BMI, while ideal weight formulas return a single reference figure.
