Lean and strong, nice work. Losing fat is about the deficit and keeping your lean mass. I can build both sides of that.

The armed forces need a fast, low-cost way to assess body composition for large numbers of people, so they rely on a tape measurement of a few body sites. This calculator uses the same circumference approach to give you an instant estimate of your body fat percentage.

How the tape test works

The method estimates body fat from your height and the circumference of your neck and waist, with the hips added for women. It is the same formula developed and validated for the US Navy, and it needs nothing more than a cloth tape measure.

How to measure

Measure your neck just below the larynx and your waist at the navel, keeping the tape level and snug against the skin without compressing it. Take each measurement two or three times and average them for accuracy, since small errors change the result.

About the standards

Allowable body fat percentages in the military vary by age and sex and are revised from time to time. This tool provides an estimate for personal tracking only. For official figures, always check the current regulation, as the exact thresholds and measurement protocol can change.

Improving your result

Because the tape test is driven largely by waist size, the way to improve it is to lose fat around the midsection. SmaartCoach builds the calorie deficit and the training plan that gets you there while keeping your strength and muscle intact.

Frequently asked questions

How does the army measure body fat?

The military uses a tape test based on circumference measurements of the neck and waist (and hips for women), similar to the US Navy method this tool uses.

What are the army body fat limits?

Standards vary by age and sex and are updated periodically. Check the current official regulation for exact allowable percentages, as this tool is an estimate only.

Is the tape test accurate?

It is a practical field estimate. It can differ from lab methods, so use it to track your own trend rather than as an exact medical value.

How can I pass the tape test?

Reduce waist fat with a steady calorie deficit and keep training. Lowering waist circumference relative to neck is what moves the result.
